about

Sometimes called "The Rare Old Mountain Dew", this is an Irish folk song dating from 1882. The song describes the intoxicating properties of Irish moonshine, or Poitín.

lyrics

Oh, Let the grasses… grow…
And waters flow…
In a free… and easy… way...

But give… me enough…
Of the rare… old stuff...
That's brewed… near Galway… Bay…

Come gouges all…
From Donegal…
Or Sligo… and Leitrim… too……

And we'll give ‘em… the slip…
and we'll take… a sip,
Of the rare… old Mountain… Dew…

Skiddly idle diddle dum, Skiddly idle diddle dum,
Skiddly idle diddle doodle dum deh… [X 2]

There's a neat… little still…
At the foot… of the hill…
Where the smoke… curls up… to the sky…

By the smoke… and smell…
you can plainly… tell,
There's poitín… boys… nearby…

For it fills… the air…
Wwith a perfume… rare,
And betwixt… both me… and you...

As home… we stroll…
ya can take… a bowl…
Or a bucket full of… Mountain Dew…

Skiddly idle diddle dum, Skiddly idle diddle dum,
Skiddly idle diddle doodle dum deh… [X 2]

Now… learned men…
Who use… the pen…
Have written…… the praises… high…

Of the rare poitín…
From Ireland green…
Distilled… from… wheat… and rye…

Put away… your pills…
It'll cure… all ills,
Be ya Pagan… Christian… or Jew…

So take off your coat……
And grease… your throat…
With a bucket full of… the Mountain… Dew...

Skiddly idle diddle dum, Skiddly idle diddle dum,
Skiddly idle diddle doodle dum deh… [X 2]

[Repeat 1st Verse]

Skiddly idle diddle dum, Skiddly idle diddle dum,
Skiddly idle diddle doodle dum deh… [X 4]
